LIG has been working with a dynamic team of women at Joburg City Parks, situated at Huddle Park in Linksfield, Johannesburg since August 2019.
The Foundation was tasked by Joburg City Parks with reinvigorating and regenerating the soil and establishing a food garden called the ‘Madiba Harvest Garden’ which had fallen into disrepair and yielded very little food.
After an analysis of the food garden was done, the objectives and steps required were established. These objectives were shared through practical courses with staff members and volunteers. Within a year, the garden has been transformed into a foodscape with rich, fertile soil that has generated an abundance of food including tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, chillies, peppers, swiss chard and herbs. All the while LIG has taught valuable lessons and addressed the unique challenges presented by this particular garden through initiatives such as providing protection from hail with shade netting and launching a seed saving programme.
With the success of the first phase, LIG was given additional land on which to grow more food. The 26 established and flourishing beds will now be expanded upon with the help of generous donors. A budget is available on request.
